2nd Sunday of Advent – Year A “Prepare the Way with a Renewed Heart”

Blurbs by Rev. Fr. Pete Literal

This Sunday, we meet John the Baptist—bold, strange, and deeply holy. His voice breaks into our Advent, reminding us that God often comes to us in unexpected moments, especially in the interruptions and challenges of life.

John’s message is clear and urgent: ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand!’ Repentance isn’t about shame — it’s about hope. It’s the grace-filled choice to turn back to Jesus, allow Him to heal our hearts, and renew our lives. This is the first step toward becoming a truly Eucharistic people.

Isaiah’s vision of peace—where “there is no harm or ruin”—may seem distant from our world today. However, Advent urges us to continue working for justice and compassion, trusting that God is already active through us. With the Spirit alive in our hearts, we help bring God’s peace into our homes, relationships, and community.

As we prepare for Christmas, John challenges us to “make straight the paths of the Lord” within our own hearts. That may involve lowering our pride, deepening our prayer, or releasing sin that separates us from God. The Sacrament of Reconciliation offers a beautiful place to start anew.

So we ask ourselves this Advent:
What is the condition of my heart?
Am I open to God’s healing and renewal?

May this season guide us toward genuine repentance, greater peace, and a joyful willingness to welcome Christ into our lives.
