This question today, based on the readings, “Who is with us, and who is not?” touches many aspects of our lives. From issues like undocumented immigrants to the recognition of gay and lesbian unions, and even within our faith community, we grapple with defining boundaries.
However, today’s Scripture readings offer a profound answer to this question. Jesus declares clearly, “Anyone who is not against us is for us.” This statement challenges our tendency to set strict boundaries based on our standards. We often try to define God’s kingdom according to our limited perspectives, but God’s realms are far greater. Jesus reminds us that the Spirit moves freely, beyond our understanding and limitations. Secondly, our mission as a church is to proclaim the good news, bring His presence everywhere, and accompany all to Jesus Christ. God’s kingdom extends beyond geographical or societal boundaries, often appearing where we least expect it. The only way we can enter God’s realm is to begin within us. Entering God’s kingdom is an inward journey of honesty and self-reflection. Our holiness must surpass external observance to enter the kingdom of heaven.
To believe “we are with God” while others are “not” based on our rules is misguided. Instead, we are called to embrace the inclusive love of Christ. Remember, “Anyone who is not against us is for us.” Let’s open our hearts and welcome everyone into God’s boundless love. This is where the Filipino Council of the Archdiocese of Baltimore is spiritually anchored.
