The disciples debated, “Who is the greatest?” They vied for the top spot, unaware of what true greatness meant. So Jesus showed them greatness from the cross and taught that true greatness lies in serving others. He said, “The first shall be last and servant to all.” To be great in Jesus’ eyes is to serve humbly and generously, placing others’ needs above ours. This is an important component of the mission of the Filipino ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Jesus calls us to be His true followers by setting aside our desires for the sake of others. He asks us to be servants in our families, among friends, and within our communities. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be last of all and the servant of all.” We must be mindful of the dangers of jealousy and selfish ambition. These are signs of a godless way of life. True Christians prioritize others’ needs over their wants daily and in every moment. True greatness is conquering us and being the presence of Jesus for others. The ultimate goal of the St. John faith community is our unity with God. Together, we draw strength from Jesus Christ, who made Himself weak, even unto death, so we could be strong.
As a united Filipino ministry, let us pray together for the strength to reach out in charity, to conquer our selfishness, and to ascend the Mountain of God, by serving others, following Jesus’ example, and striving for union with God.
